Oil Painting Demonstration with Megan K. Euell

A representational oil painter based in Brooklyn, Megan K. Euell is inspired by light, texture and rhythm. Her work showcases her keen sense of observation as she paints land, cityscapes and portraits from life. She aims to capture the character and vernacular of her subjects, blending the timelessness of the medium with a sense of modernity.
Euell is a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design and The Florence Academy of Art. She is a member of the esteemed Salmagundi Club and the Portrait Society of America and has received recognition through various awards and grants from organizations including the Art Renewal Center, The Salmagundi Club, The Artist’s magazine, The Stobart Foundation, The National Cowboy Museum, Savannah College of Art and Design and Florence Academy of Art. Her work is in both private and public collections in the US and Europe. She was recently featured in a documentary by director and filmmaker Emily Anderson, ‘Portrait of a Lighthouse’, A Hamptons International Film Festival Selection of 2025.
Euell is an instructor at the Long Island Academy of Fine Art in Glen Cove, NY. She also teaches privately in Brooklyn, New York City, and the Hamptons during the summer. Euell works from her studio space at Industry City that she shares with her husband, Francis Waplinger, a shoemaker.

As you are aware, our website has been launched. Suzanne, James, and I have dedicated ourselves to mastering its intricacies. This platform has significantly enhanced our ability to communicate effectively.
We extend our gratitude to Tim for his invaluable contributions to email and newsletter distribution. Suzanne has developed a template for the newsletter and has graciously volunteered to do the newsletter.
We are deeply appreciative of our volunteers and board members, whose efforts are instrumental in organizing demonstrations, workshops, exhibitions, and outdoor events. If you have the opportunity, we encourage you to contribute your time and skills. Your involvement will be highly rewarding.
This fall, we will feature Megan Euell conducting a demonstration and workshop. Susan Strauss will showcase her floral arrangements, which will be raffled off.
In my personal pursuit of artistic expression, I have endeavored to paint or draw daily. Consistency has proven to be a valuable tool in enhancing my skills.
As a final note, we welcome any suggestions for activities or instructors. Please do not hesitate to contact me via email.

Fall Workshop with Megan K. Euell
Landscape in Oil
Megan will demonstrate and teach how she goes about painting a landscape. The participants will paint afterwards with personal guidance from Megan. The supply list will be sent to all registered participants beforehand. Bring you own lunch.
Coffee and a snack will be provided upon arrival.

Fall Members' Exhibition at Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library
Come join your fellow painters at our Fall Members' Exhibition where your art will be showcased and admired by fellow artists and the general public. After much deliberation, our distinguished judge will award both a certificate and a monetary gift to winners in numerous categories: Jacqueline Wenn Best in Show and Dan Slapo ____, our most prestigeous awards will be given at the Fall Members' Exhibition. You may price your painting for sale, if you like. A list of all participants, their painting title, medium, and sale price will be available to all visitors.

Plein Air--Bayard Cutting State Park
Dine on home-made food on the mansion's veranda at the Hidden Oak Cafe with a spectacular view of the river. The dahlia's (Long Island Dahlia Society) will be in bloom down by the barn, where the chickens are clucking.

Bart DeCeglie “Painting with Gauche” Workshop

Of the six participating artists, I was the only one who painted exclusively in watercolor. Since gauche is a water-based medium, I thought I’d be safe. While the rest of our merry crew were primarily oil painters, they all had watercolor experience. Though gauche is water-based, it is also opaque, and marries better to oil than to a watercolor style of painting. In other words, you put light on top of darks and do not have to save the lights. A new, brain-twisting experience for the watercolorist.
We found a shady spot in Clark Botanic Garden near the house with a view of a white pergola. Bart chose this subject because it met all his criteria for a great painting: it was in strong light, with lovely shadows, and good darks. The subject would go from 1 to 10 in the value spectrum giving us “good bones” to shore up our painting with a good foundation.
While Bart demonstrated his technique, he taught us how to work with gauche, from a first wash to building up layers with thicker paint. In this way we could make any corrections we wanted once the quick-drying, paint layer dried. In this regard, gauche is unlike oil paint which takes days to dry and unlike watercolor that you (basically) cannot correct. Bart declared, “Once you have tried gauche, you will never want to go back to watercolor.” It captures the best of both oil and watercolor worlds.
Gauche is:
· Easy to transport so is great to use en plein air
· You work on paper or in a sketchbook so it is light to carry
· It cleans with water, so no oil or turpentine is needed (It is not messy)
· It dries fast so you can paint quickly
· You work can be corrected easily
· Your finished painting can be transported effortlessly
I learned something new—always a plus. We were comfortable situated, had an interesting, challenging subject to paint, a good teacher who communicated well, and a nice group of painters to spend the workshop time with. Who could ask for anything better?
